Organica: Wastewater Recycling and Management
Wastewater recycling has recently been a big development in the wastewater management community. A company that stood out to me for their unique wastewater recycling plans was Organica. Through a two-week virtual internship, I learned about the different ways that Organica differed from other wastewater management and recycling companies.
The main factor that differs Organica from other companies is the location of their wastewater plants. Their wastewater management plants are located in urban spaces, making it cheaper and easier for the water to pump through the city or town to the plant. This is also a very energy efficient way to pump the wastewater because it takes a lot of energy to move the water from inside the city to a remote location containing the plant.
A question that you may have is how do wastewater recycling plants even work? Well, the main aspect of recycling plants is to remove all of the waste and nutrients that make the water unsafe to use. In Organica, they use actual plants to clean the water! Plants are able to absorb the nutrients from wastewater and use it as food and resources to grow and survive.
Orginca created smart and effective way to transport wastewater throughout a city, and they created a quick and safe way to thoroughly clean the water, so it can be recycled. Unfortunately, Organica currently is an international company, meaning they are not working on any projects in the US. The US would benefit from having effective wastewater plants like Organica.
