Fire Protection Engineering: What is it?
Fire Protection Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering that focuses on identifying and solving fire-related risks. From small kitchen fires to wildfires, fire protection engineers work to keep people and the environment safe from the dangers of fire. Fire protections engineers are able to detect and control a fire by applying science and engineering principles, like any other engineer.
When a new construction project is being made, a fire protection engineer would study where the best and most effective places for fire protective services, like sprinklers or smoke alarms, would be placed. They also work to constantly improve the way fire detecting objects can operate so people are able to stay safe in the unfortunate event that a fire takes place.
Along with protecting people from fires, fire protection engineers also try to protect the environment from natural disasters like wildfires. Recently, there have been many wildfires affecting our environment, such as the California and Canada wildfires, which caused lots of destruction to nature and affected and polluted the air for hundreds of miles away. Fire engineers look to solve these problems, so global warming is not affecting our planet more and more.
Fire protection engineers need to be familiar with fire dynamics and characteristics, know how fires emerge and begin, and how fires are able to spread. These are all things that they need to know because the engineers need to be able to have enough information about how to understand, detect, and control fires. Hopefully, in the near future, there will be lots of important developments in fire protection engineering, as we need to help protect the environment in the many years to come.
